Working Together for a Sustainable Future: Advancing the Recyclability of Fibre-Based Packaging

With an impressive recycling rate of 83.2%, Europe already leads the way in the recycling of fibre-based packaging. But this is just the beginning. At the 4evergreen Annual Conference in Brussels, over 160 industry experts gathered under the theme “New Horizons 4 Packaging” to explore new opportunities for advancing circularity.
A key objective: increasing the recycling rate of fibre-based packaging to 90% by 2030. Achieving this ambitious goal requires establishing clear standards across the entire product lifecycle—from design to collection and sorting.
Our expert, Dr. Johannes Zipfel, joined forces with colleagues from the 4evergreen Workstream 1, including Peter Hengesbach, Raymond De Schrevel, Lydia Tempel, Vanessa Wortmann, Marie Geißler, Christian Trieb, and Manon Schoevaerdts, to work on a groundbreaking project: Version 1 of the Recyclability Evaluation Protocol. This protocol will set a definitive standard for assessing the recyclability of packaging.
The conference highlighted exciting advancements in fibre-based packaging, updates on new regulations such as the PPWR, progress from various 4evergreen workstreams, and inspiring success stories from 4evergreen members. It was a dynamic and collaborative environment, showcasing the industry’s commitment to achieving perfect circularity.
We are proud to be part of this forward-thinking community, working tirelessly to make packaging even more sustainable every day.
